DEAR EDITOR:

The Carbon Neutral Coalition would like to thanks Steve Szymanski and Planet Bluegrass for the generous donation to our organization, the Carbon Neutral Coalition. We are honored to be a recipient of the tips at the beer booth, which allows our organization to actively work on efforts to reduce, offset and ultimately eliminate carbon pollution in this region.

Our organization was born in 2016 at Telluride Mountainfilm as the New Normal project, a collaboration between Mountainfilm, EcoAction Partners and the Pinhead Institute.

Today it is made up of a powerhouse of individuals and organizations that come together to systematically, urgently and tenaciously work on reducing the larger than average carbon footprint of our region. The work that we are doing to address carbon emissions here at home would not happen without the generous support from Planet Bluegrass.

With this funding, the first project we tackled was the nagging issue of the school cafeteria using plastic utensils daily for lunches. They were tossing around 1,000 plastic forks a week and everyone knew this was a problem but it hadn’t been resolved.

So we went into the school, worked with the administration and staff, called in the local Earth Guardian group of young environmental activists, educated and helped institute a student-lead initiative. In November, the middle school/high school successfully rid the school of plastic and replaced them with reusable utensils in the cafeteria.

Our most recent project is working to bring more solar panels to local schools with the goal to offset the energy use of those buildings with renewable energy and pursuing more renewable energy in the region.

Thanks you, Planet Bluegrass for your support! We could not do it without you.
