For the first time since 1999, Telluride will be hosting an amateur bordercross / skiercross race.
It’s open to any boarder or skiers with the nerve to race down the course side by side with your competitors.
The event is part of the United States of America Snowboard Association series. There will also be a slopestyle competition — a competition on the rails and jumps of the lower part of the Hoot Brown Park.
There is no age limit, so competitors can be anywhere from 0 to 100 years old. Theoretically, they could even be older than that. If they’re able.
“We should have a pretty amazing turnout,” said Kirk Davis, snowboard coach for the Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club.
The last time Telluride had a slopestyle competition, snowboarders came from all over the state to participate.
Davis stayed up late this week working with snowmakers and snowcat drivers from the Telluride Ski and Golf Company, sculpting the course into something that has just the right angles, just the right height jumps, and just the right amount of difficulty.
“It’s not too steep but it’s good,” said Davis. “You can control your speed.”
The race will start at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The only hurdle to overcome if you’d like to participate is a slightly steep entry fee. The races are $20 per person per day. If you’re not a member of the national snowboard association, the USASA, you have to pay a $35 membership fee.
