This just in: Diet soda might be bad for you

In May 1992, the official U.S. Air Force Magazine, Flying Safety explained: “In pregnancy the effects of aspartame can be passed directly to the fetus, even in very small doses. People have suffered aspartame-related disorders with doses as small as that carried in a single stick of chewing gum. This could mean a pilot who drinks diet sodas is more susceptible to flicker vertigo or to flicker-induced epileptic activity. It also means that all pilots are potential victims of sudden memory loss, dizziness during instrument flight and gradual loss of vision.”

Aspartame is sold by Monsanto Chemical Co. as NutraSweet and EQUAL, and now under other names by other producers.

Aspartame is a molecule composed of three components: methanol, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. When ingested or heated, the methanol (wood alcohol) converts to formaldehyde (an embalming fluid) then formic acid (the active ingredient in household limescale remover).  Phenylanine and aspartic acid, both amino acids, are toxic when unaccompanied by the other amino acids in proteins. It also has been shown to cause brain lesions in experimental animals.

Between 1981 and 1995, the FDA received more than 10,000 consumer complaints on Aspartame, or 80 percent of all its complaints received about food additives.

Many individuals complaining of headaches, depression, slurred speech loss of memory, loss of sensation or shooting pains in the lower legs, loss of equilibrium, vertigo, anxiety attacks, chronic fatigue, seizures, heart palpitations or the new “disease,” fibromyalgia, may be suffering from “Aspartame disease.” 

Dr. H.J. Roberts, a diabetic specialist, says that aspartame may adversely influence control of diabetes by negatively interacting with insulin and may cause clinical diabetes.  His studies have found it may also aggravate or simulate diabetic symptoms of the eyes, kidneys and peripheral nerves.

If a food additive can possibly cause all of these side effects — only some of the 95 adverse reactions reported — how has it become so entrenched in the mainstream of our society today? Let’s follow the history of Aspartame.

1965: Aspartame discovered and patented by the G.D. Searle & CO

1967: Dr. Harold Waisman, a biochemist at the University of Wisconsin, conducts aspartame safety tests on infant monkeys for G.D. Searle & Company. Of the seven monkeys fed aspartame mixed with milk, one dies and five others have grand mal seizures. The seizures stopped when it was discontinued.

1977: Reagan supporter Donald Rumsfeld made head of G. D. Searle & Company. Federal attorney Sam Skinner assigned to prosecute the G. D. Searle Co. for their fraudulent tests used to get Aspartame approved.

1980: Head of the FDA, Jere Goyan refused to approve the legalization of Aspartame, due to the studies documenting increase of cancers in rats. (see the Bressler Report)

1981: Goyan removed from his post on the first day of Reagan’s presidency. Reagan appoints Arthur Hayes, MD., Commissioner.

1982: Hayes legalizes Aspartame.

1983: Head of the FDA, Arthur Hayes, under fire for accepting corporate gifts. Quits and joins Searle’s public-relations firm as senior medical advisor. Aspartame renamed “NutraSweet.”

1985: Monsanto purchases G.D. Searle & Co. Rumsfeld receives a $12 million bonus.
1991: Several members of the FDA board left their jobs after banning stevia (aspartame’s main competitor at that time) for legalization as a food additive. Stevia, which is herb-derived, is used as a sweetener in Japan and represents 40 percent of the sweetener market.*

1992: All ex-FDA members hired at Nutrasweet in higher paying jobs, according to national records.

NutraSweet is found in thousands of foods and on every restaurant table.  Individuals are encouraged by their doctors and the weight-loss industry to drink “diet” sodas in order to limit their sugar ingestion.

According to the National Soft Drink Association [NSDA], at 86 degrees F, Aspartame breakdown increases.

Aspartame makes you crave carbohydrates due to seratonin depletion.  The formaldehyde stores in fat cells, particularly on the hips and thighs. Since NutraSweet hit the market, obesity has become epidemic. Coincidence?

NutraSweet/Equal/Spoonful is found in thousands of foods like children’s vitamins, medicines, Kool Aid, Jell-O and on every restaurant table. Always read labels.

*Currently, The Coca-Cola Company and Cargill are jointly developing Rebiana a stevia-derived sweetener with the intent of gaining regulatory approval in the US and EU.
